AutoSpin Automatic WDT Distribution Tool
Achieve consistent, evenly distributed coffee grounds with minimal effort. AutoSpin takes the guesswork out of puck preparation by automatically breaking up clumps and distributing your coffee grounds evenly across the basket, ready for tamping.
Simply place AutoSpin onto your portafilter and the device starts automatically. Its programmed planetary needle movement works across the entire coffee bed to create a more uniform puck, helping you achieve more consistent espresso extraction.
Whether you are preparing espresso at home or working through a busy café service, AutoSpin makes professional-quality puck preparation fast, simple and repeatable.
Why Puck Preparation Matters
Consistent puck preparation is an essential part of producing great espresso. Even the most advanced espresso machine cannot compensate for poorly distributed coffee grounds.
Uneven distribution can create weak areas in the coffee puck, allowing water to take the path of least resistance. This phenomenon, known as channelling, causes some areas of the puck to receive more water than others. The result can be an uneven extraction, producing a combination of over-extracted and under-extracted flavours instead of a balanced espresso.
For reliable puck preparation, three things are essential:
-
Consistent coffee grounds
A quality espresso grinder produces a uniform grind suitable for espresso extraction. -
Even distribution
The coffee needs to be evenly spread throughout the portafilter basket before tamping. AutoSpin performs this distribution automatically using its 12-needle planetary system. -
A level, consistent tamp
A self-levelling, calibrated tamper such as the Timemore Impulse Tamper helps create a consistently level puck with every shot.
Manual WDT vs AutoSpin
Consistency
Manual WDT depends on the speed, pressure and movement of the user. AutoSpin uses a calibrated motion designed to provide consistent distribution.
Repeatability
Results from manual WDT can vary from shot to shot depending on technique. AutoSpin follows the same programmed cycle each time.
Speed
Manual puck preparation can interrupt workflow, particularly during busy service. AutoSpin operates automatically with minimal involvement.
Cleanliness
Manual WDT can result in coffee grounds being displaced or spilled. AutoSpin provides controlled, contained puck preparation.
Key Features
Fully automatic operation
The device activates when placed onto the portafilter, allowing hands-free puck preparation.
12-needle planetary distribution system
The planetary needle configuration works across the entire coffee bed to provide comprehensive puck coverage.
Calibrated movement
Programmed forward and reverse movements are designed to distribute the grounds consistently from one cycle to the next.
Automatic start and stop
There are no complicated controls. Place AutoSpin onto the portafilter to begin. Lift it away to stop, or allow the programmed cycle to complete automatically.
Rechargeable battery
The built-in USB Type-C rechargeable battery provides up to 2,000 cycles per charge.
Fast charging
A complete charge takes approximately 1.5 hours.
