The Rancilio Silvia Pro was launched into the market last year and was an immediate success. The Silvia Pro took the legendary Silvia and added Dual Boilers for large volume of steam and simultaneous steaming and pulling shots. Then they added an extra pump to feed the steam boiler to make sure the pressure to the group head does not suddenly drop if the steam boiler needs a top up. Then they added a dual PID system to keep brew and steam temperatures within 1deg C of the set temperature.

Then the Pro X came and added a pressure gauge and more importantly time adjustable SOFT pre-infusion. Soft pre-infusion is normally only found on top of the range commercial machines. Many commercial machines that offer pre-infusion is a hard pre-infusion(normal pump pressure) which is of very little value. Soft pre-infusion moistens the puck gently to ensure it is not disturbed. This allows the puck to properly settle before the high pressure delivery of the actual shot starts. this reduces channelling in the puck and improves shot quality!

Home Barista Course is an absolute win

If you think you have been making a mean cuppa using your machine, think again. What was a good cup before, is now a professional brew. Well worth it if you are trying to hone your skills as a barista. It was good to get some of the theory in from the plant, to the brew. Understanding what is happening with your machine and the beans helped me to understand the process better and seeing how to create an arty tulip from the frothed milk has also showed me what I was doing wrong. Certainly something to experience.

I attended the Home Barista Course on 11/01/2025 presented by Ruth and learnt a lot, not only about perfecting the Espresso shot but in coffee production and the roasting process as well. I could not get the milk frothing sorted until attending the course and learnt how to get the perfect Espresso. This was well worth it the money and time spent as my wife has commented on the improvement in the taste of the cappuccinos
